How to Read a Free Gutter Estimate (Without Getting Fooled)
By Danny Marchetti, Founder & Lead Installer at LI Gutter Service.

The most expensive mistake LI homeowners make on gutters is comparing three quotes that aren't comparing the same thing. One is .027 gauge aluminum on spike hangers. One is .032 gauge on hidden hangers. One is sectional big-box stock. All three say "seamless gutters, 180 linear feet."
Here's how to read a written estimate so you actually know what you're buying.
Required line items on any honest quote
Linear feet, itemized by run if possible. A quote that just says "whole house" is a handshake, not a spec.
Gutter gauge. .032 aluminum is the standard for quality installs. .027 is budget. .025 is bottom-of-the-market. If the quote doesn't state the gauge, it's almost certainly .027 or thinner.
Corner count and type. Strip-miter or box-miter? Butyl-sealed or caulked? Outside or inside corners?
Downspout count, size, and location. "Five 2x3 downspouts at [drawn or described locations]" is specific. "Downspouts as needed" is not.
Hanger type and spacing. Hidden hangers every 24" is what you want. Spike-and-ferrule every 36" is the 1970s spec and why 50-year-old gutters sag.
Color and coil manufacturer. "White" is not a color — there are 40+ white shades. Specify the coil brand (Englert, ABC, Quality Edge, etc.) and exact color name.
Tear-off and disposal. Is the old gutter hauled? Is dumpster fee included?
What "seamless" actually means
"Seamless" means the gutter is extruded in one continuous piece per run, with seams only at inside/outside corners. It does NOT mean the whole house is one gutter.
A true seamless install has no mid-run seams. If a quote says "seamless" but also shows multiple 30 ft sections per run, someone's misusing the word.
The crew should form the gutter on-site from a coil using a portable seamless machine. If they're delivering pre-cut sections from the shop, that's sectional with extra steps.
The five things cheap quotes leave off
Fascia inspection. Replacing gutters without inspecting the fascia is how the new gutters fail in 3 years.
Apron flashing. The thin metal strip between the roof shingles and the gutter back. Without it, water wicks behind the gutter into the fascia. Adds $1-2 per linear foot if it's not there already — cheap quotes skip it.
Drip edge. At the rake and eave. Should be present or installed as part of the job.
End caps with sealed seams. Should be butyl-sealed from the inside. Cheap caps are just crimped on.
Debris disposal. Should be explicit. Otherwise you find old gutters in your shrubs for a month.
Red flags in any gutter quote
"Today-only" pricing. Legitimate installers hold their quotes for 30 days. "If you sign today" is sales-boiler-room nonsense.
Huge upfront deposits. 25-33% deposit is normal. 50%+ is a cash-flow red flag.
No license or insurance listed on the quote. NY HIC, Nassau/Suffolk county licenses, and GL/WC insurance should all be printed on any real contractor's quote.
No physical address. P.O. boxes are fine for mail but a legitimate contractor has a shop or office somewhere.
Reviews under 20. Gutter companies doing volume in LI all have 100+ Google reviews. Under 20 means they're new, they've been sued under another name, or they're a referral shell.
How to compare three quotes fairly
Get all three on identical specs. If Quote A is .032 and Quote B is .027, ask Quote B to re-bid at .032 before comparing. If Quote A includes apron flashing and Quote B doesn't, ask for an add-on quote.
Then — and only then — compare the numbers. In most LI head-to-heads, once you normalize spec, the cheap quote becomes the middle quote. And the "premium" quote is often a franchise with $3K of overhead baked in.
The right middle quote from a dedicated gutter installer is usually the best value on Long Island.
